Why Lake Wood Rots Where the Water Bounces
On a lake house, rain isn't the only water. Splash off the deck, damp air off the water, and hard afternoon sun on lake-facing walls all work on the paint. Once the paint goes, the wood underneath starts to rot.
What happens to the wood. Paint is the only thing keeping water out. When it cracks, water soaks into the flat parts of the window, the sill and the bottom of the sash, and around Lake Norman the air rarely gets dry enough for them to dry out. The fungus moves in and works from the inside. The top of the window usually stays dry and solid.
Clad windows aren't safe either. On aluminum-clad windows the cladding is sealed to the glass with silicone. When that silicone lets go, water runs in behind the aluminum and collects in the pocket like a bathtub, and the wood underneath sits in it.

The aluminum clad covers the outside of the wood and is sealed to the glass with silicone. One: the silicone lets go and rain runs in between the glass and the aluminum. Two: the water collects in the pocket between the aluminum and the wood and fills it up like a bathtub, the same way the desiccant fills in a sealed glass unit; the wood next to it starts to darken. Three: the tub is full, the wood sits in water, never dries and rots, while the aluminum outside still looks perfect.
