One company quotes $198 for a foggy window, another quotes over $1,000 for the same fog. The difference is what each one plans to replace. Here is the part that actually failed:

Only the sealed unit failed. The butyl seal around the edge opened, moisture got in, and the desiccant inside the spacer filled up like a bathtub until the water came out on the glass. The frame, the sash and the trim didn't fail. That's why swapping the glass unit is the real repair, and a whole new window means paying for parts that were never broken.

What the price covers. A new unit built to the size of your glass: two new panes, a new spacer, fresh desiccant and fresh butyl, plus the labor to take the old unit out and seal the new one into your frame. That's why the price follows the glass:

  • Glass area moves it most. Bigger glass, more material.
  • Tempered glass, required near doors, floors and tubs, costs more than regular glass.
  • Grids between the panes add $60.
  • Frame material changes the labor a little: wood and aluminum frames add a few dollars over vinyl.

What doesn't change it. The brand, the age of the window, or how bad the fog looks. Light fog or heavy white streaks, the fix is the same new unit at the same price.

Why drilling looks cheaper. "Defogging" drills the glass and dries the space, but the seal stays open and the desiccant stays full, so the moisture comes back. You pay once for something that doesn't last, and then pay for the unit anyway.
