Why the Sill Rots First, and What the Repair Covers

The sill is the sloped piece of wood under the window, on the outside. Its job is to catch the water that runs down the glass and send it away from the house. That makes it the hardest-working piece of wood on the window, and usually the first to rot.

Why the sill goes first. Every rain ends up on the sill. As long as the paint is whole, water runs off the slope. Once the paint cracks, water soaks into the wood, and on a nearly flat surface it sits longer than anywhere else on the window. The sill stays wet, the fungus moves in, and the wood turns soft from the inside long before you see a hole.

What the $475 covers. We cut the sill back to solid, healthy wood, mill a new piece in our own shop to match the original profile, splice it in, prime it, and close the gap that was letting water in. The rest of the window stays. A rotted sash, the movable part that holds the glass, is rebuilt the same way from $375.

How we price it. By the piece: each sill and each sash gets its own line. We probe the wood first and put the number in writing before any cutting.

What not to spend money on. Filler hides rot without removing it, so it comes back. A new window for a rotted sill means paying for glass and a frame that weren't broken.
