Why Sliding Doors Stop Sliding: What Actually Fails
A sliding glass door looks like one big piece of glass, but the whole heavy panel rides on two small rollers hidden in its bottom rail. They roll along a metal track on the sill every time you open or close the door.
Each roller is a small wheel spinning on a ball bearing, held in place by an axle pin. An adjustment screw sets how high the door sits.
Try this before you call anyone. Two checks you can do yourself with a screwdriver:
- Adjust the rollers. Over the years a door sags. The adjustment screws are in the bottom corners of the panel, going into the side of each roller housing. Turn them clockwise to lift the door, counterclockwise to lower it. If the door starts to glide and lines up with the lock again, you're done, no visit needed.
- Check the track. Run your hand along the metal rail on the sill. If it's straight and smooth, with no humps, dents or flattened spots, the track is fine.
If turning the screws doesn't bring the door back, the rollers themselves are worn out. That's when it's time to replace them.
Why rollers fail. The rollers live in the worst spot in the house: at the very bottom of the door, in the track, where water and dirt collect. Rain, pollen, grit and sand get into the track and into the rollers. The bearings rust, the balls fall out, and the wheel stops spinning. Now it grinds instead of rolling, and the door takes two hands to move. Sometimes the axle pin that holds the wheel breaks. The wheel drops out of place, the door sits down on the track, drags, and won't slide straight or line up with the lock.

Signs your rollers are going:
- A grinding or crunching sound when you slide the door.
- The door takes two hands, or sticks halfway.
- It jumps the track, or the lock no longer lines up.
- The gap along the top or bottom of the panel isn't even anymore.
Why spray won't fix it. Lubricant can quiet a dirty track for a while, but it won't bring back a rusted bearing or a broken pin. And a door dragged on bad rollers wears down the track itself.
